Newly Released Amp Ultra Aligns Perfectly with Our Anticipated WiiM Device Upgrade
Turning Up the Volume: A Closer Look at WiiM's Amp Ultra
WiiM is set to expand its portfolio this year, not just with new product lines, but also by bolstering its specialty - affordable streaming components. The star of this expansion is the WiiM Amp Ultra, a streaming amplifier that houses the best of the Ultra streamer and the existing Amp and Amp Pro streaming amplifiers.
Last year, our expert reviews team wasn't overwhelmed by the Amp. However, the Ultra streamer, like its less expensive sibling, the Pro Plus, has been a resounding success. If WiiM manages to incorporate decent-sounding amplification circuitry into the Amp Ultra, it could prove to be a compelling offering that's tough to resist.
The WiiM Amp Ultra amps up the streaming power of the Amp and Amp Pro models, delivering a punchy 100 watts per channel, compared to the 60 watts of its predecessors. Aesthetically, it maintains the minimalist aluminum chassis and the nearly as slick touchscreen we've grown accustomed to in WiiM products.
At its core, the Amp Ultra relies on WiiM's operating system and Home app, which offers seamless integration with multiple streaming apps like Spotify, Amazon Music, Tidal, and Qobuz. In addition, it supports Google Cast, Alexa Cast, DLNA, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, and Bluetooth. Voice control is available through Alexa, Google Assistant, and the included WiiM Voice Remote.
WiiM's ecosystem users will find familiar functions like automatic room correction, multi-room grouping, and EQ customization in the Amp Ultra. Additionally, it offers TV integration features such as HDMI ARC, Dolby Digital decoding, and a subwoofer output. With the ability to power up to four passive speakers simultaneously, the Amp Ultra can serve as the hub for a multi-channel (up to 4.1) speaker system or drive a couple of stereo setups around the home.
Priced below £400 / $400 / AU$600, the WiiM Amp Ultra seems poised to challenge the ceiling in home audio components. However, we'll have to wait and see; WiiM has yet to announce pricing later this year.
