NFL Stadiums Embrace PepsiCo's Innovative Reusable Cup Initiative
PepsiCo, San Francisco 49ers, and Bold Reuse Introduce Reusable Cups at Levi's Stadium
In a significant step towards promoting sustainability, PepsiCo, the San Francisco 49ers, and Bold Reuse have partnered to introduce reusable cups at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. This marks Bold Reuse's first deployment in the state and a key expansion in its national sports partnerships.
The reusable cup project, which was introduced during a preseason game on August 9 in premium club areas at Levi's Stadium, is expected to eliminate the need for tens of thousands of disposable cups across the 49ers' 10 home games this season. This initiative is part of PepsiCo's broader efforts to reduce waste and promote sustainability.
Bold Reuse has been testing its partnerships involving reusable cups not only at Levi's Stadium but also with the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Ohio, and with Keurig Dr Pepper at Soldier Field in Chicago. The company's expansion signifies a key step in promoting the use of reusable cups in sports venues across the United States.
Burgess Davis, chief sustainability officer for PepsiCo North America, stated that advancing reuse requires collaboration and a systemic shift to make the reusable option the most convenient and accessible option for consumers. Davis added that initiatives like this can provide important insights into how a shift to reusable options can become a reality at scale while having an immediate impact in reducing waste.
Reuse is now part of PepsiCo's broader packaging goal: ensuring 97% of primary and secondary packaging in key markets is recyclable, compostable, or reusable. PepsiCo has previously set a target of delivering 20% of beverage servings via reusable models by 2030, but has since decided to sunset this formal target.
In 2026, major brands will offer reusables for foodservice packaging in California, supported by regional reverse logistics infrastructure and a citywide consumer campaign. Bold Reuse is also piloting RFID technology with Avery Dennison in Portland to better track reusable cup lifecycles.
The Levi's Stadium program marks Bold Reuse's first deployment in the state of California. The partnership marks PepsiCo's first reusable cup project with an NFL franchise. Davis emphasised that this partnership is a significant step in PepsiCo's plans to deliver a net-zero plant by 2025.
Previously, Bold Reuse has partnered with the NBA's Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center. The reusable cup initiative at Levi's Stadium is not only a milestone for PepsiCo and Bold Reuse but also for the NFL, as it marks the expansion of reusables to NFL stadiums. This collaboration underscores the commitment of these organisations to reducing waste and promoting sustainability in their operations.
