Nigeria Unveils N-ATLAS: Africa's First Multilingual Large Language Model

The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced N-ATLAS, an innovative multilingual and multimodal large language model (LLM) that supports Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Nigerian-accented English. This open-source tool, developed by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in collaboration with Awarri Technologies, aims to prioritize African voices and local languages in AI development.

N-ATLAS, initiated by the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), is equipped with advanced speech-technology capabilities. It can transcribe radio, TV, and online videos into text, generating captions and subtitles in the four local languages. The model can also summarize interviews conducted in these languages, enhancing communication and information sharing.

The model's potential extends to creating chatbots for accessing government services in Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Nigerian-accented English. Full documentation of N-ATLAS is available on Hugging Face, making it accessible for further development and integration.

N-ATLAS was launched by Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. This groundbreaking model represents a significant step towards empowering local languages and voices in the digital age, with potential applications in various sectors.
