Carris Metropolitana Introduces Tap&Ride Contactless Payment System

Carris Metropolitana, the public transportation operator in Lisbon, has taken a significant step towards modernizing its services with the introduction of the Tap&Ride contactless payment system. The new system, which allows passengers to pay for fares directly on buses using bank cards with contactless technology, was first implemented on lines 1624, 2769, and 3001 in July 2021.

The new system is part of Transportes Metropolitanos e Lisboa's (TML) strategy to invest in digital solutions that simplify and encourage the use of public transportation. Rui Lopo, a representative from TML, stated that the aim is to build a more modern and intelligent mobility system, where technology is at the service of a better passenger experience.

The Tap&Ride service became available on several buses on lines starting with 1, 2, or 3 in late July 2025. Specific lines already using the system include line 1624 (Cascais Terminal to Portela de Sintra), line 2769 (Lisbon Campo Grande to Santo António dos Cavaleiros), and line 3001 (Almada Cristo Rei to Cacilhas Terminal).

Expansion plans indicate that the Tap&Ride system will soon be extended to lines starting with 4. A symbolic launch trip took place in late July 2025 to mark the rollout milestone. This initiative aims to increase contactless payment options and ease passenger boarding times.

Carris Metropolitana's operations also include connections to municipalities that have not delegated responsibilities and directly manage municipal transportation: Barreiro, Cascais, and Lisbon. Since June 1, 2022, Carris Metropolitana has been operating in four areas, each concessioned to different private operators. Area 1 operates in the municipalities of Amadora, Oeiras, and Sintra, operated by Viação Alvorada. Area 2, operated by Rodoviária de Lisboa, covers Loures, Mafra, Odivelas, and Vila Franca de Xira. Area 3 operates in Almada, Seixal, and Sesimbra, operated by Transportes Sul do Tejo, and Area 4 is managed by Alsa Todi.

The new payment solution will be an essential element in the intermodal mobility of the metropolitan region, according to Teresa Mesquita, another representative from TML. SIBS's DNA is reflected in this project, which aims to make life simpler through easy, fast, and secure payments. The Tap&Ride system is expected to significantly improve the passenger experience on Carris Metropolitana bus lines.
