Nvidia issues urgent RTX 5060-series software update to resolve random black screens upon system restart
Got a Problem with Your RTX 5060 or RTX 5060 Ti? Here's a Fix!
Sick and tired of those pesky blank screens when you restart your system? You're not alone, mate. Nvidia has come up with a solution, and it ain't your typical driver update. They're delivering a firmware update, straight to the GPU's heart, known as the vBIOS.
The issue probably pops up due to a miscommunication between Nvidia's vBIOS and your system's BIOS/UEFI. But don't worry, this problem is solvable, and only affects users who are dealing with blank screens. If you're blissfully booting up without a hitch, you can skip this update.
The affected systems typically have issues when booting in Legacy mode or those without full UEFI support. Nvidia suggests reaching out to your GPU manufacturer's customer service for a legacy vBIOS update if your motherboard doesn't support UEFI boot mode.
Nvidia's RTX 50 range, particularly the problem-laden R570 driver branch, has been known to cause trouble. It even messed with older RTX 20/30/40 series GPUs. And yes, if your RTX 5060 or RTX 5060 Ti is showing you a blank screen when rebooting, chances are, you've got a vBIOS problem on your hands.
This issue seemingly only affects the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti family of GPUs, based on GB206 silicon. The question remains: what specific changes in these GPUs led to this problem?
To resolve the issue, you'll need to boot into your Operating System—a pain in the neck, given your current predicament—and use the NVIDIA GPU UEFI Firmware Update Tool v2.0. Download the tool, run it, and follow the instructions mockingly dancing across your screen. Just remember, a power outage during the firmware update could leave your GPU in a quagmire of debris.
