OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank Expand Stargate Project, Boosting AI Infrastructure
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have joined forces to expand the Stargate Project. This initiative, initially announced by President Donald Trump, aims to bolster AI infrastructure. The first data center is already operational in Abilene, Texas, with four more on the way.
The Stargate Project is set to create 25,000 onsite jobs. Nvidia will invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and supply data center chips for the project. The first data center in Abilene, Texas, is already operational and filled with Oracle Cloud infrastructure and Nvidia chips. OpenAI and SoftBank are building five more data centers, including one in Lordstown, Ohio, scheduled to start operation next year. Two more sites in Lordstown, Ohio, and Milam County, Texas, are also in the works. Additionally, three new sites in Shackelford County, Texas, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, and an undisclosed Midwest location are planned. The project is ahead of schedule, with a total capacity of nearly seven gigawatts and over $400 billion invested over the next three years. However, the companies have scaled back their plans and are now focusing on building a smaller data center by the end of this year, likely in Ohio.
The Stargate Project, a joint venture between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, is making significant strides in AI infrastructure. With the first data center operational and several more in the pipeline, this project is expected to create thousands of jobs and bring substantial investment to various locations across the United States.
