Overcoming Gladius, the Nightbeast: Guidance on Defeating Tricephalos Boss in Elden Ring's Nightreign Realm
In FromSoftware's latest co-op roguelike, Elden Ring Nightreign, players will encounter various Nightlords, with the first major boss being Gladius, Beast of Night. This Cerberus-like three-headed wolf can be a challenging foe, especially for new players, but with the right strategies, it can be defeated.
Gladius' weakness is Holy damage, so it is recommended to build a character with a Holy weapon. Players should look for enemy camps marked with a gold-yellow line and magical particles for a chance at a high-quality Holy weapon. The best Nightfarer characters to take on Gladius are melee-centric fighters, such as Wylder, Guardian, Raider, and Executor. They are more effective in dealing with the frenzied boss than ranged characters like Ironeye and Recluse.
Phase 1 of the Gladius fight involves a series of bites and headbutts from its three heads. Players should roll forward and past these attacks, then stick to Gladius' sides and legs to get a few hits in and force the boss to turn and attack again. When Gladius swings its chained sword through the air, players should roll through the sweeps or jump over them to avoid damage. It is worth noting that if a player is close to Gladius, only the first sweep needs to be avoided; the second and third will miss them entirely.
Gladius may also target one player with its sword by swinging it into the air vertically and bringing it down onto someone from above. This attack is heavier, but easier to see coming. To avoid damage, players should dodge in any direction away from the sword slam. From afar, Gladius may breathe fire at players. To avoid this attack, players should roll forward through the flames, delaying their roll if they are far away and the fire needs time to reach them.
Gladius' deadliest move in phase 1 is a grab in which it winds up by opening its jaws and becomes surrounded in a purple aura. This move deals severe damage and should be dodged like any other.
Phase 2 of the fight begins when Gladius' health is about 70%. This phase is very chaotic as Gladius splits into three fireballs that players have to roll through if they fly towards them. Each fireball turns into a one-headed version of Gladius, each with the same attacks as its combined form. The one-headed Gladius with the sword on its back can perform the same sword moves. Players should draw each wolf's aggro to avoid being overwhelmed. The wolves tend to rotate between passive and aggressive behaviors, but when the one with the sword roars, all three will gain red eyes and attack together. It's important for players to coordinate their dodges during this attack. Eventually, the wolves will coalesce back into Gladius' combined form, at which point he'll be able to use two new moves: a leap into the air and a slam of the sword followed by fire waves. Players should dodge through the explosion or sprint behind Gladius as he leaps into the air to avoid the threat. They should also roll forward through the fire waves to avoid damage.
Players should stick close to Gladius throughout the fight and punish him after dodging his moves if they are a melee character or get what damage they can in if using a ranged Nightfarer while carefully avoiding his sword slashes and fire breaths. Eventually, Gladius will fall, marking the defeat of the first of many Nightlords to come in Elden Ring Nightreign.
