payabl. Joins EPI to Launch Wero, Europe's Instant A2A Payment Solution
paypal has joined forces with the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to integrate Wero, its pan-European digital wallet. This move enables merchants and payment service providers (PSPs) to offer instant, secure account-to-account (A2A) payments across Europe. Martina Weimert, CEO of EPI, welcomes this integration, highlighting the growing momentum behind Wero and the acceleration of secure A2A payments across borders.
Wero, EPI's digital wallet, is supported by major European banks such as BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, CaixaBank, UniCredit, and Santander. This integration allows paypal, one of the first licensed members of EPI, to offer customers a new way to pay. Ugne Buraciene, Group CEO of paypal, sees this as the start of a new payments era, where Europe sets the benchmark for seamless, secure, and inclusive commerce.
A2A payments are projected to grow significantly, from 60 billion transactions in 2024 to 186 billion by 2029. This growth is driven by consumer demand for faster and more secure payment methods. A recent study shows that 53% of consumers are willing to switch to new payment methods, with 30% doing so for a faster checkout process. The top three drivers of payment choice are convenience, speed, and security, indicating that consumers are active decision-makers in how they pay.
Wero, with its instant cross-border payments clearing in under 10 seconds, offers a lower-cost alternative to cards. With paypal's integration, merchants and PSPs can now offer customers this innovative, secure, and convenient payment method. As A2A payments continue to grow, Europe is poised to establish its own scalable alternative with Wero, accelerating the shift away from traditional card rails.
