Penguin Solutions collaborates with SK Telecom and SK hynix on artificial intelligence technology development
In a groundbreaking move, Penguin Solutions, SK Telecom, and SK hynix have joined forces to enhance the research, development, and marketing of high-performance, high-availability accelerated computing technologies and solutions. This collaboration, focused on the development and delivery of AI data center solutions, aims to bolster South Korea's domestic AI industries.
At the heart of this partnership is the ambition to create competitive AI computing resources. These resources, including GPU clusters and advanced servers, will support AI research, development, and commercial use cases at scale.
SK Telecom has taken the lead in launching the largest GPU-as-a-Service (GPUaaS) in South Korea, developed in partnership with Penguin Solutions, a top NVIDIA partner renowned for high-performance computing solutions.
Penguin Solutions is expanding its relationship with SK hynix to focus on system-related products and enabling memory technologies for new AI applications. The formal AI data center collaboration agreement, signed in early 2025, synergizes the partners’ capabilities and accelerates AI infrastructure deployment.
Improving power efficiency and heat dissipation performance is a key challenge in the efficient operation of AI data centers, according to SK hynix. To address this, SKT's AI infrastructure management software, combined with Penguin Solutions' Scyld ClusterWare software, can simplify installation, deployment, and optimization of a full-stack AI deployment.
Mark Adams, president and CEO of Penguin Solutions, stated that the collaboration reflects a shared vision of leveraging the companies' combined strengths to deliver a broad portfolio of high-performance AI solutions to customers across the globe. Penguin Solutions brings over 25 years of experience in designing, building, deploying, and managing HPC, with a proven track record of over 85,000 GPUs deployed and 2 billion hours of runtime data.
SK hynix aims to overcome the limitations of memory technology and expand the global AI ecosystem through collaboration with SK Telecom and Penguin Solutions. The collaboration between the companies also extends to SK hynix and SMART Modular Technologies, a product brand of Penguin Solutions, which plans to collaborate to develop innovative memory solutions for accelerated compute infrastructure environments.
This collaboration lays the foundation for building globally competitive AI data centers, according to Ryu Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom. The agreement was signed during CES 2025 in Las Vegas, with Penguin Solutions showcasing their solutions in the "Alliance Zone" of the SK Telecom booth at the event.
Together, these companies are poised to revolutionize the AI data center landscape, addressing the challenges in semiconductor memory technology and delivering innovative solutions to customers worldwide.
