PNAS & Jisc Ink Two-Year Open Access Pilot Deal for UK Researchers
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) has signed a two-year open access (OA) pilot deal with Jisc, a notable step towards sustainable OA models in scientific publishing. This 'Publish-and-Read' agreement benefits UK researchers and institutions. Under this deal, researchers at Jisc's 156 UK universities can access PNAS's entire content archive, dating back to 1915, at no cost. Additionally, corresponding authors at UK institutions can publish OA articles in PNAS without paying article page charges, covering 100% of UK research output published in PNAS during the pilot period from July 2021 to June 2023. PNAS, one of the world's most respected multidisciplinary scientific journals, publishes over 3,500 research papers annually. Its publisher, Ken Fulton, sees this agreement as a Plan S-compliant route to open access publishing and an exploration of OA business models. Jisc, with its vision for the UK to be the most digitally advanced education and research nation, facilitates this through its national research and education network, Janet. This pilot agreement between PNAS and Jisc not only reduces costs for UK institutions but also aligns with Plan S principles, promoting open access publishing. It significantly boosts UK researchers, enhancing their work's visibility, accessibility, and impact.
