Porsche Revives 718 Boxster, Cayman with Hybrid Powertrain
Porsche has reversed its decision to make the 718 Boxster and Cayman fully electric in their next generations. The company is now planning to introduce a breaking news hybrid version of the models, using the 911's flat-six hybrid powertrain.
The new hybrid powertrain, dubbed T-Hybrid, combines a 3.6-liter flat-six engine with two electric motors. This setup produces an impressive 532 horsepower and 449 lb-ft of torque. Porsche is considering using this powertrain in the 718 models, which would be a significant upgrade from the current four-cylinder engine that does not comply with new European emissions regulations.
The decision to revert to hybrid engines comes with a cost. Porsche acknowledges that developing combustion engines with hybrid technology is expensive, which is likely to result in higher pricing for the new 718 models. Only the most expensive trims are expected to feature internal combustion engines, making them a high-end news option. The starting price of the T-Hybrid powertrain in the 911 Carrera GTS is $178,250, giving an indication of the potential cost of the ICE version of the 718.
Porsche is also exploring the use of the evolved 982 series platform for the 718 models. This could simplify production and boost economies of scale, as the same platform and powertrain could be used for both the 911 and 718. However, a new automotive cybersecurity law in Europe led to the discontinuation of the Boxster and Cayman, which may impact the future of ICE 718 models.
Porsche's new direction for the 718 Boxster and Cayman involves a hybrid powertrain derived from the 911, promising increased performance and compliance with emissions regulations. However, this change comes at a higher cost, with only top-tier trims expected to feature internal combustion engines. The future of ICE 718 models in Europe remains uncertain due to recent regulatory changes.
