Porsche Spearheads EV Battery Recycling Project Ahead of EU Regulations

Porsche is pushing ahead with its EV battery recycling project. The company is refining recycled materials, known as 'batteries plus', to extract high-purity elements for new electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This strategic move aligns with anticipated EU regulations and Porsche's commitment to sustainability.

Porsche has launched a multi-phase pilot project focused on recycling high-voltage EV batteries. So far, around 65 tonnes of raw granulate have been produced from development vehicle batteries. The project aims to recover critical raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, and lithium through mechanical shredding.

Barbara Frenkel, Executive Board Member for Procurement at Porsche, has stated that the circular economy is a core pillar of their sustainability strategy. Porsche's goal is to reduce environmental impacts, secure future material supply, and hedge against geopolitical volatility in raw material markets through this closed-loop approach. In the third and final step of its pilot project, Porsche plans to manufacture battery cells containing recycled content for real-world testing in future models. This proactive step is a strategic pre-emptive move towards anticipated EU battery regulations coming into force in 2031, which will demand higher levels of 'batteries plus' and traceability.

Porsche's commitment to responsible resource use is evident in its early rollout of the EV battery recycling project. By refining recycled materials and planning to use them in new batteries, Porsche is not only reducing waste but also securing its future material supply and hedging against market volatility. This leadership in sustainable vehicle production sets a high standard for the industry.
