Portuguese firm i-charging introduces MCS solution in market

The Portuguese charging station manufacturer, i-charging, has made a significant stride in the electric vehicle (EV) industry with the presentation of its megawatt charging system (MCS) solution called i-light at the IAA Transportation fair in Hanover.

The i-light solution promises an efficiency rate of between 98 and 99%, a critical factor in reducing charging times for eTrucks. The system is designed to address the need for faster and more efficient charging, supporting the transition towards sustainable energy.

The i-charging solution consists of a power unit and satellites, each equipped with a charging point. The Power Unit in the i-light system distributes the charging current across multiple satellites through dynamic load balancing, enabling the total power of 1.5 megawatts to be distributed between one and six satellites.

The satellites of the i-light solution feature a 37-inch display, and have dimensions of 55 x 62 centimetres and a height of 2.55 metres. The system, similar to other charging systems with a Power Unit and narrow-profile satellites, such as those from Kempower or Ekoenergetyka, is a testament to i-charging's commitment to innovation.

Both MCS and Combined Charging System (CCS) connections are possible with the i-charging solution. A version with CCS charging points is expected to go on sale by the end of 2024. The first i-light chargers with MCS connections are expected to be delivered in 2025, and the system will be certified in 2025 as well.

Pedro Moreira da Silva, CEO of i-charging, stated that i-light is a statement about the future of heavy transport. The i-light system is poised to revolutionise the EV charging landscape, offering a total power of up to 1.5 MW and addressing the initial challenges of MCS in eTrucks, particularly communication issues in chargers.

However, specific information about the certification date of the i-light system from i-charging is not currently available. Nonetheless, with its impressive capabilities and potential, the i-light system is undoubtedly a significant step forward in the quest for sustainable and efficient EV charging solutions.
