Reporting Antisocial Conduct on Public Transport Made Easier with Innovative Text Messaging Service

In a bid to make public transportation safer and more comfortable for all users, Victoria Police has launched a new text-messaging service called STOPIT. This service allows the public to report non-urgent incidents of anti-social or unwanted sexual behavior occurring on public transport by sending a simple text message.

To use the service, individuals just need to text the word STOPIT to the number 0499 455 455. After sending the text, they will receive a link to an online form where they can share details about the incident. The service focuses on non-urgent reports and is designed to provide an easy and discreet way for commuters to report such incidents without needing to make an emergency call.

The STOPIT service is not intended for use in emergencies; users should call 000 if they are in immediate danger. However, it serves as a valuable tool for Victoria Police to monitor and respond to anti-social behavior on public transport more effectively.

The information gathered through STOPIT helps police identify and catch offenders and informs resource-tasking to deter offenders. The form can be completed at the time of the incident or after it has occurred, and users can provide details such as the type of behavior, service, and time it occurred on. Additionally, users have the option to upload an image or video to the form.

STOPIT applies to all public transport in Victoria, including trams, trains, and buses. It complements other Victoria Police reporting options for non-urgent crimes, such as calling 131 444 or reporting online, by providing a specific channel tailored to public transport issues.

RACV Head of Policy, James Williams, has welcomed the new STOPIT service, stating it can make the public transport network safer and create a more enjoyable experience for all users. The service was designed to remove barriers and gather more information about matters on public transport that often go unreported, particularly incidents of unwanted sexual behavior.

In summary, the STOPIT service provides a discreet and easy way for commuters to report non-urgent incidents of anti-social or unwanted sexual behavior on public transport in Victoria. By texting STOPIT to 0499 455 455, users can help make public transportation a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone.
