Restored Operations for the Liability Fund
Allianz Life Insurance has confirmed that its digital interfaces, including the portal for intermediaries and online offers for end customers, are now functioning normally following a hacker attack in mid-July. The insurer took its IT systems offline as a precautionary measure after the breach, but has since brought them back online at the end of July.
The hacker attack, which occurred on July 16, was a social engineering-driven infiltration of a third-party cloud system that compromised sensitive customer data. The breach resulted in the theft of personally identifiable information (PII) of about 1.4 million customers, selected financial professionals, and some Allianz employees, including names, addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers, and possibly financial account details.
Despite the breach, Allianz's main digital interfaces for policies and services remained operational as the attack did not directly affect their own internal databases or systems used for insurance policy management. However, because the compromised CRM contained sensitive customer and professional data, the breach posed significant risks of identity theft, financial fraud, and phishing.
In response, Allianz took immediate action to contain the breach, notifying authorities such as the FBI, beginning contact with affected individuals, and offering 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to mitigate the impact on customers.
Users who have not received a confirmation email regarding the activation of their subscriptions are advised to check their spam folder. To activate their subscription, users are instructed to click on the button in the confirmation email.
Allianz has reportedly fixed the issues with its digital interfaces, and the extranet for processing business cases for intermediaries is now functional again. The insurer's homepage now reports that it is back at its usual service.
