Revitalize another Peter Molyneux masterpiece with the support of Meta Quest

Going Back to the Golden Age of Gaming with VR:

Do you remember the name Peter Molyneux? His games like Dungeon Keeper, Theme Park, Populous, Fable, and Black & White were a big part of my gaming childhood, harking back to the golden age of video game development creativity.

In his weekly column, we delve into the world of VR, exploring new hardware, games, upcoming technologies, and more. Underworld Overseer and Deisim, inspired by Dungeon Keeper and Populous respectively, are already among the best Meta Quest games.

Now, a new developer is working on a Black & White successor, How To God, which you can wishlist on the Meta Horizon store. I recently chatted with the developers, and let me tell you, I'm impressed. As a fan of the Black & White games, I've been waiting for a reason to combine virtual pets with the granular control that only VR can provide, and I think I've found it.

No Harm to Animals, but Warnings Ahead:

In How To God, you're a deity who can manipulate the world around you, picking up people, trees, and animals. But you won't control your physical manifestation on the planet – a giant creature.

Much like in Black & White, this creature is fueled by an AI that learns and experiments with the world around it. It's like a pet, with its personality and morality shaped by your encouragement or discipline, influencing the people in the world.

The primary objective is to inspire humans to worship you, increasing your powers. As they pay tribute in shrines, you collect prayer power, growing your influence and your worldwide notoriety.

While some features can be found in other games, the "virtual pet" aspect sets How To God apart. It's your creature that gives the game its character and intrigue, especially among Meta Quest strategy games.

Like training a real pet, your creature must be molded to represent you effectively. It's not a summonable Familiar or a creature you can move at will. Instead, you must shape it to represent you in the world properly.

The campaign and sandbox modes should keep you busy when the game launches in the coming months. The developers have hinted at a possible multiplayer component in the future.

Insights:

  • Release Date: The exact release date of How To God is yet to be announced, but you can wishlist it on the Meta Horizon store[3].
  • Virtual Pet: How To God is unique among Meta Quest strategy games because of its "virtual pet" feature, which adds a layer of immersion and interactivity[3].
  • Nostalgia: How To God follows in the footsteps of classic games like Black & White, offering a blend of nostalgia and innovative gameplay mechanics employing VR technology[3].

In the world of How To God, players will find a blend of nostalgia from games like Black & White and innovative gameplay mechanics employing VR technology, as they take on the role of a deity with a virtual pet that represents them in the world. This pet is a key feature that sets How To God apart from other Meta Quest strategy games.
