In the throbbing heart of Shanghai, a monumental architectural complex from the 1920s-1930s, known as the Huayanli Shikumen complex, made headlines recently. According to China Daily, this historical relic weighing around 7,500 tons and sprawling over 4,000 sq.m was transported using a swarm of 432 robots.This groundbreaking relocation project marks the largest of its kind in China, showcasing innovative robotics in action.

The complex is a fascinating ensemble of three brick-wood structures, each intricately designed. The temporary relocation was orchestrated to pave the way for a three-story underground space beneath it. The relocation operation commenced on May 19, with the complex gliding back to its original location on June 7.

Curious about the moving magic? This marvel was possible thanks to a conga line of 400+ miniature robotic devices. These build-your-own-robot kits styled as minuscule walkers positioned themselves beneath the complex's foundation. The robots, functioning in pairs, employed a smart, synchronized dance where one robot stabilized the complex while the other took a step forward, generating a reciprocal motion that eased the movement.

The complex journeyed an average of 10 meters per day, moving steadily and meticulously to preserve the delicate structures without a scratch. This painstakingly slow yet incredibly precise movement was a testament to the robots' prowess and the team's precision.

This historical conservation project, a crucial part of Shanghai's urban modernization plans, was initiated to safeguard the complex amid the revitalization of the 140-year-old Zhangyuan cultural and historical district. Renowned for its collection of Shikumen architecture, this district is a treasure trove of China's rich heritage. The relocation project underscores Shanghai's dedication to preserving its historic past while keeping pace with modern city expansion.
