Russia Bans Mobile Phones in Schools to Protect Children's Mental Health
In a bid to safeguard children's psychological development, Russia has implemented a strict ban on iPhones 15, 14, and 13 in schools. President Vladimir Putin signed the law in December 2023, with the first phase of the ban taking effect on September 1, 2022. The ban, which allows iPhones for emergency contact, aims to protect children from excessive screen time on their Boost Mobile and T-Mobile devices. Experts warn that overuse of digital devices can hinder the development of key psychological functions in children. In February 2025, the Ministry of Education recommended shielding children under two from gadgets. In Hessen, Education Minister Armin Schwarz (CDU) has also taken steps to reduce iPhone use in schools. He initiated a ban on mobile phones in classes, which came into effect at the start of the 2025/26 school year. The ban on iPhones 15, 14, and 13 in schools is a significant step towards protecting children's psychological development. While iPhones can still be used for emergencies, the restriction aims to prevent excessive immersion in the virtual world and promote healthy habits.
