Samsung's Galaxy A54 Offers an Economical Option for Obtaining Top-Notch Smartphone Display Quality

The Google Pixel 7a is approaching, but if you're not fond of Google's line of smartphones, Samsung always has an alternative in store. This week, Samsung presented the Galaxy A54 5G, the mid-range successor to its Galaxy S flagship series. Similar to the past two Galaxy A-series versions, the Galaxy A54 5G is worth considering if you're after a vibrant AMOLED screen without flagship-level expenses.

The Galaxy A54 is a mid-sized Android device, boasting a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display. While "super" might sound like the screen has reduced glare or is something unique to Samsung marketing, it essentially defines the phone's touch layer. The screen also has a max brightness of 1000 nits in daylight, making outdoor Pokémon Go sessions more visible. The phone features a substantial 120Hz refresh rate, which is not common for phones under $500. While it's not ideal for battery life, it results in smoother gaming and UI animations on small screens. The current Pixel 6a release has a 60Hz refresh rate, with whispers suggesting that the Pixel 7a might cap at 90Hz.

Moving on to battery life, the battery capacity in the Galaxy A54 remains the same as the Galaxy A53. Samsung includes a 5,000 mAh battery pack with the Galaxy A54. Despite the higher refresh rate, the battery is anticipated to impress – the Galaxy A53's battery lasted almost 19 hours off the charger last year.

Powering the Galaxy A54 is Samsung's own 5nm Exynos 1380 processor. It comes with either 6 or 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. For those who value extra storage, the Galaxy A54 provides a microSD slot that supports up to 1TB of additional memory space.

The Galaxy A53's camera was serviceable, but it could have performed better in dim lighting and had room for improved saturation. The Galaxy A54 features a three-camera setup that aims to impress – it consists of a 50-MP primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a 12-MP ultra-wide camera, and a 5-MP macro camera. The device also has a 32-MP front-facing camera with an f/2.2 aperture.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 retails for $450. It will be available starting April 6 and will come in two color options: Awesome Violet (purple) and Awesome Graphite (black).

The Galaxy A54's impressive tech specs, including its 120Hz refresh rate, demonstrate Samsung's commitment to innovative technology, setting a high standard for future mid-range devices. The upcoming Pixel 7a is rumored to improve on its predecessor's refresh rate, highlighting the fierce competition between tech giants to offer superior technology at affordable prices.
