Second Tiger Poaching Incident in MM Hills Sanctuary in 2025
The Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, along with the National Tiger Conservation Authority, have begun a thorough investigation following the discovery of a tiger's partial body in the Malai Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary. The incident, which occurred on October 2, 2025, has been confirmed as a case of poaching, marking the second such incident in the sanctuary this year.
Forest officials found the carcass of a tiger's head, shoulder, and front limb, sparking a detailed investigation. The government has since increased patrolling and bolstered anti-poaching measures in the sanctuary. A slipper found near the carcass led investigators to deploy sniffer dogs to track the poachers. Karnataka's forest minister, Eshwar B Khandre, has ordered a report within eight days. This incident follows the poisoning of a tigress and her four cubs in July, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced conservation efforts.
The poaching of another tiger in the MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary underscores the pressing threat to India's tiger population. Authorities are working diligently to apprehend the culprits and strengthen sanctuary security. The gender of the latest victim will be confirmed upon postmortem and laboratory analysis.
