South Africa Streamlines Travel: New ETA System & Visa-Free Expansion
South Africa is streamlining its travel processes. Minister Leon Schreiber has unveiled a five-year plan, 'Home Affairs @ Home', to modernize the Department of Home Affairs' services. Key changes include an electronic travel authorization (ETA) system and expanded visa-free entry.
Currently, citizens from 90 countries can enter South Africa visa-free for stays of 30 to 90 days. Additionally, 34 countries can use the electronic visa (e-Visa) system for simplified entry. However, starting October 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the US and Germany, will need to apply for an ETA before visiting.
The ETA system, inspired by successful models in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Israel, and the EU, will replace paper visas. Travelers will submit an online application, providing biometric data, and receive a unique numeric code linked to their passport. Upon arrival, visitors will scan their ETA code and provide biometric data for verification. The system will alert immigration officers in real-time if a traveler overstays their authorization.
The 'Home Affairs @ Home' plan aims to make all services fully automated, digitized, and available online by 2029. This includes extending or changing one's stay through the same secure online platform, receiving instant decisions. The goal is to enhance security, efficiency, and convenience for both visitors and immigration officers.
