Scatec Secures Preferred Bidder Status for South Africa's Haru BESS Project
Scatec ASA, a leading renewable energy company, has been awarded preferred bidder status for the Haru Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in South Africa. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced the award, and the project is set to be located in the Free State Province.
According to the department, the estimated total capital expenditure (capex) for the battery energy storage project is ZAR 2.2 billion (USD 120 million). Scatec will provide engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), operations & maintenance (O&M), and asset management (AM) services for the project, accounting for approximately 80% of the project's cost.
The Haru BESS project totals 123 MW/492 MWh. Scatec will own 50.01% of the equity in the project, with Stanlib's Greenstreet and Redstreet Funds owning 44.99% and a Community Trust holding 5%.
Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog has stated that the award reaffirms Scatec's standing as a leading renewable energy player in South Africa. He applauded the South African government's commitment and dedication to the renewable energy procurement programs.
The project will be financed by 90% non-recourse project debt, and the remaining by equity from the owners. Scatec will receive payments under a 15-year agreement for making the storage capacity available to the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA).
Alberto Gambacorta, GM and EVP Sub-Saharan Africa at Scatec, emphasised the importance of dispatchable energy and grid infrastructure for South Africa's energy system. He stated that Scatec continues to actively support battery integration to stabilise the national grid in South Africa.
The commercial close for the Haru BESS project is expected to be concluded by the end of Q1 2026, according to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. The project name was previously referred to as the Northern Cape Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), but it has been officially named the Haru BESS project.
Scatec's winning of the battery storage project in South Africa is not specified in the provided paragraph. However, the company has expressed its appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to South Africa's renewable energy sector and grid stability.
