Spotify Embraces TikTok-Oriented Music Trends

Vertical video format continues to be popular, as another app repeats TikTok's trend.

Banish Monday Blues with Another Platform Hoping to Clone TikTok's Success

Let's face it, when your calendar flips to a Monday ending in 'Y', it seems like the whole digital world is playing a never-ending game of catch-up – emulating TikTok's madly popular format to attract those valuable 18-34 age groupers. This endless cycle of imitation just keeps chugging along, whether TikTok rules the roost or time decides to pull the plug. Is it Spotify this week? Yep, you got it!

Drops the News Bomb – You guessed it! According to a TechCrunch report, Spotify has jumped onto the bandwagon of Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest, Netflix, Snapchat, and more, testing out a vertical video feed that scrolls on and on, reminiscent of TikTok. Nestled between the Home and Search buttons in a spanking new Discover tab, Spotify's version shows users a curated collection of music videos they can ogle, like, or skip.

Shout-out to developer Chris Messina for spotting the new feature first – the vertical music video feed being a simplified, scaled-down version of a TikTok-style scroll, complete with the same Canvas format that Spotify initially introduced in 2019. Canvas allows artists to embellish their music with highly stylized video clips within the Spotify app.

Messina's Tweet

Unlike Instagram (who reeks of troubled desperation with their wannabe Reels feature), Spotify has a genuine knack for video – all thanks to the short music clips fueling the virality of TikTok itself. Data suggests Canvas increases user engagement, so perhaps the feature has a future beyond the music industry. Now, all we can do is wait and see if this Discover project materializes on iOS and Android platforms anytime soon.

Welcome to the dance, Spotify. The platforms will keep imitating TikTok for as long as the music – or time – continues to spin!

  1. The endless imitation of TikTok's success by various platforms continues, with Spotify testing a vertical video feed reminiscent of TikTok, as reported by TechCrunch.
  2. Similar to TikTok, Spotify's new feature, nestled between the Home and Search buttons in the Discover tab, showcases a curated collection of music videos for users to interact with.
  3. Prior to this, Spotify had introduced Canvas, a format that allows artists to embellish their music with stylized video clips within the app, which is being incorporated into the new feature.
  4. Much like other platforms attempting to replicate TikTok's success, the outcome of Spotify's Discover project remains uncertain, with hopes that it will materialize on iOS and Android platforms soon.
