Spotify Tackles AI Music Surge with New Transparency Measures
Spotify is tackling the surge of AI-generated music head-on. With nearly 30,000 AI-created tracks uploaded daily on Deezer alone, and an estimated $4 billion in yearly revenue by 2028, the streaming giant has removed 75 million tracks in the past year due to spam and deceptive uploads. Now, Spotify is implementing new measures to protect artists and inform listeners.
Spotify is introducing a new credit system called DDEX to help artists clearly state if and how AI was used in their music. This move aims to provide transparency for listeners and respect for creators. Additionally, Spotify is testing tools to prevent 'profile mismatches', where lesser-known artists upload songs under the names of popular ones to gain fame.
To combat the flood of AI-generated music, Spotify is launching an ai detector. This tool will identify and tag patterns of abuse, such as mass uploads and duplicate tracks, and either stop promoting or remove flagged songs. Spotify has also clarified its terms of use, making it clear that these rules primarily apply to listeners and not creators. The company is also adopting industry-standard labeling for AI-generated content and strengthening its spam filters to better regulate such tracks.
Spotify is also tightening its rules around vocal deepfakes. AI-generated voices imitating real artists will only be allowed with explicit permission from the original artist. This move respects the rights and likeness of artists in the digital age.
Spotify's actions reflect its commitment to balancing innovation, artist protection, and listener information in the face of AI-generated music's rapid growth. By implementing these measures, Spotify hopes to create a fair and transparent environment for both creators and listeners.
