Spotify first teased its HiFi tier in 2021, but licensing hurdles delayed its release. However, the company has since signed new deals with major labels in early 2025, potentially clearing the path for HiFi's launch.
Bloomberg reported that Spotify plans to introduce a premium Music Pro tier later this year, featuring high-quality streaming. This aligns with Spotify executives' hints about investing in premium products for 'super fans'. Spotify's Chief Business Officer Alex Norstrom has confirmed the company's interest in higher tiers, including audible audio. Help cards in the Spotify desktop app now describe the audible tier and its features, further fueling speculation.
The audible audio tier on Spotify will offer up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz streaming, requiring compatible devices for optimal playback. According to app code findings, the release date is set for September 2025, with a phased rollout starting on September 10 to Premium users in over 50 regions, continuing through October.
