Standards organization SMPTE appoints Amazon's Raymond Yeung as Vice President
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has announced a significant change in leadership, with Raymond Yeung taking on the role of Standards Vice President.
Yeung, who is currently the head of content standards at Amazon MGM Studios Technology, will draw from his extensive experience to drive innovation for the standards community at SMPTE. His appointment was welcomed by SMPTE President Richard Welsh, who expressed his delight at the new addition to the team.
Under Yeung's stewardship, SMPTE will continue to spearhead the evolution of professional media standards, focusing on next-generation media technologies and interoperability. The organization's current advancements in standards development are particularly geared towards enhancing interoperability, IP media transport, microservices frameworks, and content packaging formats — vital for the industry's ongoing digital transformation.
A major focus area remains the SMPTE ST 2110 standards for professional media over managed IP networks. This set of standards underpins live production workflows transitioning from traditional SDI to IP-based systems. SMPTE is also advancing standards related to microservices architectures tailored for media applications, providing a unified terminology resource to foster common understanding and implementation across the industry.
Moreover, SMPTE continues to support the Interoperable Master Format (IMF) user community by developing and maintaining standards that facilitate efficient exchange and management of complex media assets. This improvement in global content distribution and versioning workflows is a testament to SMPTE's commitment to staying at the forefront of the rapidly changing media technology world.
Under Yeung's leadership, SMPTE emphasizes active member participation in technology committees that develop and refine standards. These committees generate outcome reports and continuously update practice as technology evolves.
Yeung's high standing in the community played a role in his appointment as SMPTE's vice president of standards. He has served as a SMPTE standards director and chair of Technology Committee 35PM. Prior to joining SMPTE, he worked at Dolby Laboratories, starting as part of the HDR imaging development effort in 2021.
Yeung is a SMPTE Life Fellow and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He will remain in the standards VP role at SMPTE until the end of the year.
