Steam adheres to the UK's age verification regulations without sharing user data with external parties, offering a more secure approach than Xbox.
In the digital age, online platforms are increasingly implementing age verification methods to ensure a safe and appropriate environment for all users. Two popular gaming platforms, Steam and Xbox, have recently updated their policies to comply with the new Online Safety Act in the UK.
For Steam users, age verification is a straightforward process. If a valid credit card is stored on the account, it is considered age verified. Valve, the owner of Steam, has outlined its plans to comply with the new law. The platform verifies the credit card through a zero charge transaction to ensure its legitimacy. It's worth noting that Valve's age verification methods are "data minimal," and they do not require sharing sensitive information with third-parties, scanning biometrics, or any such methods.
However, it's unclear how users who don't have a credit card can verify their age on Steam.
On the other hand, Xbox has partnered with a third-party firm, Yoti, for age verification. Users can choose to use their phone provider option or the credit card check for age verification. If users opt for the phone provider option, their mobile number is shared with Yoti. Other methods for Xbox age verification include checking with a mobile provider and a credit card check, but these options are somewhat hidden.
The email from Xbox encourages users to use these methods and mentions that they are partnering with Yoti, a trusted third-party identity verification provider. Users under the age of 18 cannot have a credit card, making this method effective for age verification.
The implementation of age verification is not limited to gaming content. Users may be required to verify their age on Xbox to retain full access to social features like voice or text communication and game invites. Limited access to social features on Xbox will be given to friends only until verification is completed.
Starting early next year, age verification will also be required for full access to social features on Xbox. This means users will need to undergo the age verification process to continue enjoying the full range of social interactions on the platform.
Despite these measures, some users express concerns about the privacy implications of these methods. The user is disappointed that Xbox is pushing a method that involves handing over identifying data to a company they know nothing about. It's essential for platforms to strike a balance between ensuring user safety and respecting user privacy.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it's likely that more platforms will adopt similar age verification policies. Users are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these policies and understand how they can protect their privacy while enjoying the digital world.
