Subaru Ends Legacy Production After 36 Years
Subaru has announced the end of an era. After 36 years, production of the Legacy will cease at the conclusion of the 2025 model year. The final Legacy models rolled off the production line in New Zealand in 2020, marking the end of an era for the popular sedan.
The Legacy's journey began in 1989 with the 7th-generation model, primarily created for the US market. It quickly gained popularity worldwide, including in New Zealand. The final Legacy models sold here were large sedans introduced in 2015, featuring 2.5-litre and 3.6-litre engines.
Subaru of New Zealand bid a 'fond farewell' to the Legacy, which once dominated the used import market with over 4000 new-vehicle sales. Despite its decline in recent news, with only 64 models sold in 2019 compared to 1322 Outback SUVs, the Legacy remains one of Subaru's most enduring models.
The Legacy's legacy lives on in the Outback, a pseudo-SUV based on the Legacy wagon, introduced by Subaru of America in 1994. Despite the Legacy's discontinuation, the Outback continues to thrive in New Zealand's market.
