Survival game undergoes significant graphic enhancement.
Enhancements Arrive for Acclaimed Survival Game 'The Long Dark'
In a welcome upgrade, mountainous survival title 'The Long Dark' has received visual improvements, now accessible on PC platforms. Developers Hinterland Studio have announced a series of graphical upgrades for the frigid Canadian wilderness, detailed in the video below.
The update provides a selection of enhancements across all available platforms, with specific features varying depending on hardware capabilities. Some of the notable improvements include:
- Vibrant Shadows
- Colored Fog
- Anisotropic Filtering
- Extended Draw Distances
- Improved Terrain Blending
- Ambient Particle Effects
- Enhanced Terrain Shadows
- Motion Blur (on select platforms)
- Improved Anti-Aliasing
- Improved Ambient Occlusion
- Improved Structure Shadows
Though Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Linux, Mac, and Luna versions will see the majority of these improvements, the console release is planned for June.
Although these enhancements make the game more demanding, Hinterland Studio suggests a robust setup to run 'The Long Dark' with all new features enabled in 1440p at 60 FPS: an RTX 3060 paired with a 3GHz CPU and 32GB of RAM.
Originally launched in early access on Steam in 2014, 'The Long Dark' gained popularity following its release on Xbox Game Preview in 2015 and its full launch on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation in 2017. The game has since sold over 5 million copies as of 2021.
As work continues on a sequel, 'Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2,' fans can expect the game to enter early access in 2026.
