Swiss Libraries See Surge in Popularity, Offering AI-Driven Projects and Diverse Activities

Swiss libraries have seen a surge in popularity, with over 46 million admissions and 40 million books lent out in 2023. The Swiss National Library in Bern, a hub for collaboration on AI-driven cultural heritage projects, is one of the many institutions catering to this demand. With nearly 1,500 public libraries and over 1.7 million regular users, libraries in Switzerland offer a wealth of resources and activities.

The Swiss National Library's services are not limited to traditional book lending. It collaborates with institutions like the Swiss Federal Archives and the University Library Bielefeld on projects involving automated metadata enrichment and AI access to cultural heritage. This cutting-edge approach is just one aspect of the library's offerings.

Libraries across Switzerland provide digital resources such as computers for research and email access. The Swiss national library platform, Swisscovery, gives users access to scientific resources from 470 libraries. Additionally, many libraries have children's activity areas, offering reading, playing, storytelling, and arts and crafts. They also provide language lessons to help people learn or improve their regional language skills.

Beyond these services, libraries host a variety of events. Smaller libraries host lectures, presentations, book clubs, and interest group meetings. Larger libraries, such as the Swiss National Library, host public events and exhibitions. The Swiss National Library, for instance, offers exhibitions, the Prints and Drawings Department, and Swiss Literary Archives.

Swiss libraries, with their extensive resources and diverse activities, play a vital role in the country's cultural and educational landscape. They cater to a wide range of users, from institutions collaborating on AI projects to individuals seeking language lessons or children's activities. With over 1,500 public libraries and millions of regular users, they remain a cherished and valuable community asset.
