Switzerland's Foreign-Driven Start-Up Boom: 25% Population Fuels 40,867 New Companies
Switzerland's foreign population continues to rise, now standing at 25% of permanent residents in 2024, up from 35.8% in 2020. Meanwhile, foreign entrepreneurs are driving business growth, with over a third of new companies registered between January and September 2024 founded by foreigners.
The Swiss start-up scene is booming. An average of 150 new companies were created daily between January and September 2024, marking a 4.3% increase from the same period last year. This surge has led to a new high of 40,867 start-ups, with the craft sector leading the way with 4,435 new companies, followed by consulting (4,310) and real estate (3,800).
Regional growth varied: Central Switzerland saw an 11.4% increase in new start-ups, while the Zurich region grew by 5.9%. However, Southwestern Switzerland, including Geneva, grew by 4.4%, and Eastern Switzerland saw a slight decline of 1.0%.
The increasing foreign population and their entrepreneurial spirit are significantly contributing to Switzerland's economic growth. As the number of start-ups continues to rise, so does the country's potential for innovation and job creation.
