Prepared to launch its 7-inch gadget titled Archos 70, the French PMP manufacturer is now ready. Priced at $279, this device undercuts the current market leader, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, in terms of cost. However, it remains to be seen if the decrease in price comes with compromises in performance.

Archos Unveils Budget-Friendly Tablet at IFA

In a move to expand its tablet portfolio, French PMP maker Archos has introduced a new 7-inch device called the Archos 70 at the IFA held in September. The Archos 70 joins four other tablets unveiled by the company during the event.

The Archos 70 comes equipped with a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, 8GB of solid state storage, and a SD card slot for additional storage. It sports an 800 x 480 pixel 7-inch capacitive multitouch screen and boasts an OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics accelerator. The tablet also features 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth, and runs on Android 2.2.

The Archos 70 is available in two variants: the Archos 70B Xenon model and the Archos 70 Helium 4G. The Xenon model features a 7-inch display, while the Helium 4G offers a 7-inch 1024x600 resolution display. The Xenon model is priced at $279, making it cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Helium 4G, on the other hand, offers 4G connectivity and a 0.3MP front camera.

Archos has launched two out of the five tablets PCs unveiled at the IFA. The remaining three tablets are yet to be launched. Among these, a higher capacity version of the Archos 70 with 250GB of internal storage and a price tag of $350 is expected soon.

The Archos 70 supports various file formats including AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, WMV, MPG, PS, TS, VOB, FLV, RM, RMVB, ASF, and 3GP formats.

When compared to Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets, Archos tablets are generally more budget-oriented with modest specs such as lower RAM (512MB to 4GB), older Android versions (around 4.4), and less powerful processors. Samsung Galaxy Tabs typically offer more advanced features, higher resolution displays, better cameras, and more recent Android OS versions.

The Archos 70 offers a basic Android experience suitable for light tasks and media consumption, while Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets come with higher specifications, better displays, more robust performance, and extensive software support. The choice between the two depends on the user's budget and performance needs.

The Archos 70, while being a budget-friendly option, can be compared to other gadgets such as smartphones and e-readers, given its 7-inch display and Android 2.2 operating system. Users looking for a more affordable alternative to high-end tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab might consider the Archos 70, which offers basic functionality and multimedia support. As technology continues to advance, it will be interesting to see how budget-friendly tablets like the Archos 70 compete with the latest smartphones and e-readers in terms of features and performance.
