Tech giant Meta introduces smart glasses boasting an integrated display, marching towards desired 'superintelligence'
Meta Unveils Consumer-Ready Smart Glasses: Meta Ray-Ban Display
Meta, the tech giant led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has taken a significant step forward in the realm of augmented reality (AR) technology with the launch of its first consumer-ready smart glasses, the Meta Ray-Ban Display.
The unveiling took place at Meta's annual Connect conference for developers, where Zuckerberg described the glasses as the perfect way for humans to reach for the AI promise of 'superintelligence.' However, the demo of the new glasses did not go as planned, with a call to the glasses failing to go through during the launch event. Despite this, the crowd cheered in support of Zuckerberg.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses come with a small digital display in the right lens for basic tasks such as notifications. They also feature an AI assistant, cameras, hands-free control, and livestreaming capabilities to social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. A wristband is included that translates hand gestures into commands such as responding to texts and calls.
According to Forrester analyst Mike Proulx, the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses can be compared to Apple's introduction of a watch as an alternative to the smartphone. Proulx describes the glasses as an everyday, non-cumbersome form factor.
Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, deems the Display glasses to have great value for the tech they offer. However, until the software improves, the glasses might not be a device that the average consumer might know about or care to purchase. Ubrani emphasizes that the software needs to catch up.
Meta trails rivals such as OpenAI and Alphabet's Google in rolling out advanced AI models. To bridge this gap, Meta has promised to spend tens of billions of dollars on cutting-edge AI chips and is even considering partnerships with Google and OpenAI to enhance its AI capabilities while continuing to develop its proprietary models.
The launch of the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses is Meta's latest attempt to catch up in the high-stakes AI race. IDC's forecast predicts that Meta will drive much of the growth in this market thanks to demand for the cheaper Ray-Bans it makes with Ray-Ban owner EssilorLuxottica. IDC also forecasts worldwide shipments of augmented reality/virtual reality headsets and display-less smart glasses to increase by 39.2% in 2025 to 14.3 million units.
The launch of the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses comes amidst scrutiny over Meta's handling of child safety on its social media platforms. Despite this, the tech giant is optimistic about the future of AR technology and the potential of the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses to revolutionize the way we interact with technology.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses will start at $799 and be available at the end of the month.
