Tesla aims to broaden Robotaxi service deployment in California within the upcoming months
In a significant leap forward for autonomous vehicle technology, Tesla's Robotaxi service is set to expand across the United States. The latest developments follow nine months since the We, Robot event, where the next-generation Robotaxi, the Cybercab, was showcased.
Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, announced that the Austin service area will be expanded this weekend, and he has provided a timeline of one to two months for the potential expansion into Silicon Valley. Regarding Arizona, Tesla applied for permits on June 26, 2025, to test and operate autonomous vehicles in the Phoenix metro area. The Arizona Department of Transportation indicated that Tesla's permit decision is expected by the end of July 2025.
Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop and a mechanical engineer with a passion for EVs, is based in Melbourne and specializes in Australian EV data, insight reports, and trends. Akhtar, who currently drives a red Tesla Model 3, spent the first seven years of his career building transport infrastructure before starting carloop.
The Robotaxi service is currently only available in a limited geo-fenced area in Austin, Texas, where hundreds of driverless rides have been taken by invited riders. Each trip costs $US4.20. The service in Texas is expected to expand beyond Austin.

Hundreds of driverless rides have already been taken in Austin by invited riders, with a self-driving Tesla Model Y navigating highways and suburban streets to reach its destination, located about 30 minutes away, without anyone in the car.
These updates highlight Tesla's commitment to expanding its Robotaxi service across the US. The company is also hiring vehicle operators and Full Self-Driving testers in both Arizona and the Bay Area, reflecting preparation for rapid national expansion in late 2025.
