Tesla Makes Its Mark in India's Automotive Landscape

Tesla, the pioneering electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is making waves in India's automotive industry. With its innovative EVs and strategic expansion plans, the company is set to disrupt the current market landscape.

Recent policy shifts by the Indian government have rekindled Tesla's interest in entering the Indian market. High import duties, which previously stood at 110%, posed significant barriers to Tesla's entry. However, the company has officially submitted an application for homologation approval for the Model 3 and Model Y in India, a crucial step towards its entry.

The homologation process for the Model Y has been successfully completed, paving the way for its official launch in the country. Tesla has launched the Model Y midsize electric SUV, available in two variants priced at ₹60 lakh and ₹68 lakh respectively, with an additional Full Self-Driving package option. Deliveries began in the third quarter of 2025.

Tesla has finalized a lease agreement for its inaugural showroom in Mumbai, located in the Maker Maxity building within the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The company is also eyeing additional showroom locations to bolster its presence in India, beyond Mumbai. Tesla has selected sites in New Delhi's Aerocity area near the international airport for potential showrooms.

Following the lease agreement, Tesla embarked on a recruitment drive to assemble a sales team in India. The company has posted over 20 job openings for various functions, including vehicle service, sales, customer support, and operations.

Beyond vehicle sales, Tesla is also focusing on advancing autonomous driving capabilities. The company is hiring full-time Autopilot operators in India to gather AI data from India’s complex driving environment. This strategic move underscores Tesla's commitment to leveraging AI to improve its autonomous driving technology.

In summary, Tesla is actively expanding in India with Model Y sales, showrooms, and service centers. The Model Y is homologated and available, while the homologation status for the Model 3 is not yet public. Tesla's India operations include AI data collection for self-driving development, positioning the company as a growing player in one of the world's fastest-growing automotive markets.
