Tesla Launches Model Y Sales in India and Unveils Initial Supercharger Stations
Tesla, the American electric vehicle (EV) giant, has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of the Model Y in Mumbai. The Tesla Experience Center, located in the Bandra Kurla Complex, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, during a grand opening ceremony.
The Model Y is now available for sales in India, with two versions: the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and the Long Range RWD. The Model Y RWD is priced at approximately ₹60 lakh (~US$70,000), while the Long Range RWD costs around ₹68 lakh (~US$79,000). These prices are significantly higher than in the U.S., where the Model Y is priced at approximately $44,990.
The high import tax regime in India is the primary reason for this price difference. The current import taxes on the Tesla Model Y range between 70% to 110%, which essentially doubles the cost. In contrast, the U.S. imposes no such import duty on the Model Y since it is sold domestically, making the vehicle substantially cheaper there.
Tesla has been hiring staff in preparation for the launch in India and has opened its first showroom in Mumbai. A second showroom is planned for New Delhi. Additionally, eight Supercharger locations are in development across the Delhi and Mumbai regions.
The Tesla Experience Center is expected to help increase awareness and interest in Tesla's electric vehicles in India. The center is a flagship space for Tesla in the country and is a significant step in Tesla's expansion into the Indian market.
However, the high prices of the Model Y in India could potentially hinder widespread EV adoption, especially for those who are price-sensitive. India offers a reduced import duty (as low as 15%) only if the manufacturer commits to a local manufacturing investment of at least $500 million. Tesla has not yet established local production in India, so the higher import taxes apply.
In summary, the launch of the Model Y in India marks a significant milestone for Tesla's expansion into the Indian market. However, the high import taxes on fully built electric vehicles in India cause the Model Y price to be approximately twice the U.S. price, making EV adoption more expensive in India if imported fully built.
