Tesla, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has made a significant entry into the Indian automobile market with the launch of its electric Midsize SUV, the Tesla Model Y. The company has also opened its first charging facility at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai, India.

The Model Y will be offered in two variants: Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (LR RWD). The RWD variant is priced at Rs 60 lakhs, while the LR RWD variant costs Rs 68 lakhs.

The LR RWD variant boasts a supercharging capability that provides up to 267 kilometers of range within 15 minutes. It achieves 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and offers a more substantial range of 622 kilometers.

The Model Y's interior features a five-seat configuration and interior options in white and black themes. The first row of seats in both variants comes with power recline, heating, and ventilation, while the second row of seats has power two-way folding and heating functions.

The Model Y's connectivity is managed by second-generation hardware, and it is equipped with eight exterior cameras for driver-assistance systems. The trunk offers hands-free power opening upon approach.

Customers can opt for Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) package for an additional cost of INR 6 lakhs. The other color options, such as Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Ultra Red, Quicksilver, Glacier Blue, and Stealth Grey, will come at an extra cost. Stealth Grey is the only color option offered at no additional charge.

Tesla has already opened its first India showroom in Mumbai on July 15, and it plans to open its second showroom in Delhi on August 11. Deliveries of the Tesla Model Y are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025, with the RWD version arriving in Q3 2025 and the LR RWD variant following in Q4 2025.

Initially, deliveries will prioritize Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, and Pune. Although Indian customers can order the Model Y across the country via Tesla’s website, early delivery priorities are set to these metropolitan areas. There are currently no reported plans or timelines for deliveries extending beyond these initial four cities into other urban centers in India.
