Tesla Launches 6-Seater Model Y in China

Tesla has officially unveiled the 6-seater version of the Model Y, known as the Model Y L, in China. The new vehicle is set to hit the Chinese market in the fall of 2025, following production that began in mid-2025[1][3].

The Model Y L boasts several key features and dimensions, making it the most spacious SUV produced by Tesla at its Shanghai factory. The vehicle measures 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. This represents an increase of 186 mm in length and 150 mm in wheelbase compared to the standard Model Y, providing more rear cabin space[1][5].

The Model Y L is equipped with a dual motor all-wheel drive system, with the front motor producing approximately 142 kW and the rear motor producing about 198 kW, totaling around 340 kW[4]. The vehicle is also expected to be equipped with an LG-supplied battery pack, likely larger (82 kWh gross) than the standard Model Y, to support the bigger size and retain good range (~450 km)[4].

Additional features of the Model Y L include a new rear spoiler, new wheel designs, a potential new gold paint option, and upgraded interior seats[2]. The vehicle is positioned as a family-friendly, spacious, and versatile SUV tailored to Chinese market preferences, with a price expected to be around RMB 400,000 (~USD 55,700)[1].

At present, the Model Y L is set for release only in China, with no confirmed plans for introduction to North America or Europe[5]. However, the spacious and efficient new Model Y could be appealing to family car buyers in Australia, where the list of 6 and 7-seater electric vehicles is expected to grow in the next 12 months[6].

Riz Akhtar, founder of carloop based in Melbourne, is a mechanical engineer with a passion for cars, particularly electric vehicles. Akhtar, who currently drives a red Tesla Model 3, specializes in Australian EV data, insight reports, and trends[7]. With the potential launch of the Model Y L in Australia, Akhtar believes it could help bring more family SUV buyers to electric vehicles[8].

The new Model Y is currently undergoing weather and altitude testing, hinting at an imminent launch[9]. If it does launch in Australia, the new 6-seater Model Y could be one of the most efficient family SUVs on the market, continuing Tesla's reputation for producing efficient electric vehicles.
