Title: Redesigning 'GQuuuuuuX' and 'For The Barrel': A Potential 'Gundam' Remix
The recently released compilation movie, titled Gundam GQuuuuuuX, serves as a reinvention of the classic Mobile Suit Gundam. While this fresh take is intriguing, it seems to miss the mark by venturing into fan-fiction territory.
Don't misunderstand; Gundam GQuuuuuuX is far from disappointing or uninteresting. Its creative reinterpretation of the One Year War from Mobile Suit Gundam is quite captivating, primarily due to Ikuto Yamashita's impressive new mecha designs. The announcement of an upcoming Metal Robot Damashii toy inspired by GQuuuuuuX is a delightful addition, expected to hit the shelves this summer.
However, one can't help but wonder if alternate timeline Gundam series are now simply retelling past events instead of unveiling new narratives. Shouldn't we then focus on animating something already popular and successful, such as the inspiring serialized story "For The Barrel" in Newtype magazine back in 2000?
"For The Barrel" boasted a groundbreaking retelling of Mobile Suit Gundam with more convincing characterizations and industrial-inspired mecha designs by the remarkable Junji Okubo. Okubo's influence extended beyond mecha designs, as he was also the mastermind behind the highly realized vertical tanks in the pioneering Xbox game, Steel Battalion, released in 2002 along with its colossal bespoke controller.
There's no denying that GQuuuuuuX is a missed opportunity in the context of Gundam's vast and cherished history of novels and mangas. With its focus on an alternate universe, one couldn't help but yearn for a modernized adaptation of the celebrated "For The Barrel" story.

Despite these reservations, we eagerly await the release of GQuuuuuuX in US theaters on February 28, distributed by GKIDS. The film will be available for all Gundam enthusiasts to enjoy, much like the acclaimed Witch from Mercury before it.
Lastly, don't mistake my critique for disinterest. I am an avid follower of all things Gundam, so I'll undoubtedly savor each episode of GQuuuuuuX as it unfolds, just as I did with Witch from Mercury.
