Toyota Unveils the Future of Automobiles with Advanced Battery and Hydrogen Vehicle Technologies
In a significant stride towards electrification, intelligence, and diversification, Toyota held a Technical Workshop on June 8, 2021, with the theme "Let's Change the Future of Cars". The event, initiated by Executive Vice President Hiroki Nakajima, provided a peek at Toyota's future release of next-generation technologies in the field of electrification.
The workshop featured diverse technologies, starting with innovations in Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen. Among the next-generation technologies unveiled, Toyota showcased batteries with a potential 1,000 km cruising range. While specific details about the battery technology were not disclosed, Toyota has been involved in advancements towards solid-state batteries, which are expected to improve safety, charging speed, and energy density, enabling longer ranges.
In the realm of hydrogen, the Hydrogen Factory, to be led by Mitsumasa Yamagata, presented next-generation hydrogen-based technologies. Toyota has been actively promoting hydrogen fuel cell technology as part of its multi-pathway strategy towards electrification. The company has applied fuel cell technology beyond the Mirai sedan, including heavy trucks and buses.
Hiroki Nakajima, in his role as Chief Technology Officer, expressed his vision during the workshop. He emphasised Toyota's aim to use technology to transport customers into the future and connect cars to society. The event allowed media to discover and try out more than 20 next-generation electrification technologies unveiled by Toyota.
The Prius, synonymous with hybrid vehicles, and the Mirai fuel cell vehicle have already paved the way for the future. Toyota has been credited with overcoming difficult challenges in technology, and the next-generation technologies presented by the company are expected to contribute to the lowering of costs and improving fuel efficiency while maintaining longevity.
The BEV Factory, led by President Takero Kato, showcased upcoming products and business outlook for next-generation battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The Toyota Times series will provide a roundup of the innovations in BEVs and hydrogen.
