At an event showcasing sneak peeks for The Witcher 4, Borderlands 4, an Okami sequel, and additional Elden Ring content, your yearly Game Awards presentation required a strong finish. And in the world of gaming, that translates to introducing a fresh Naughty Dog project, deviating from a Last of Us remake. Enter Intergalactic: Heretic Prophet.
Rumors swirled that Naughty Dog had been crafting a sci-fi epic for quite some time, dating back to 2020. Yet, information was scarce, resulting in this very first trailer featuring both cinematic scenes and in-game action.
Starring Uncharted and The 100 actress Tati Gabrielle as Jordan, the game's synopsis goes as follows:
"Set in the distant future, Intergalactic places players as Jordan A. Mun, a proficient bounty hunter who winds up stranded on Sempiria, a planet whose communication with the universe has been severed for centuries. To be the first to break free from its orbit since six centuries ago, Jordan must rely on her capabilities and smarts."
A momentary glimpse of it suggests that Jordan's quarry is quite clearly Kumail Nanjiani. As for the mysterious figure conversing with Jordan, it's a 40% alleged sighting of Sigourney Weaver.
Merely a second or two of combat footage is provided, but apart from being a third-person perspective, this promises a departure from the standard cover shooter format, like Uncharted and The Last of Us. A blazing sword clash against a mech suggests an innovative approach to combat.
Although certain weapons are inevitable, it appears Naughty Dog aims to take the combat aspect of the gameplay to an unparalleled plane.
No definite release date has been announced for Intergalactic, hinting at more waiting time, possibly until 2026 or beyond. With studio schedules being what they are, an earlier launch might be wishful thinking.
Regardless, Naughty Dog never falters in delivering. Even without relying on their cherished franchises, the goal is to replicate the enchantment that Uncharted or The Last of Us generated upon debuting and instantly becoming industry titans. Let's hope Intergalactic enjoys similar success.
