Trouble twice over: Debut of world's initial laser-equipped tank malfunctions and incinerates drones in the sky

The ALKA-KAPLAN is a groundbreaking hybrid tracked vehicle, developed by FNSS and ROKETSAN, that aims to combat the increasing threat of drones and other aerial devices on the battlefield. This innovative system combines the KAPLAN HYBRID tracked platform with the ALKA Directed Energy Weapon System (DEWS).

Key Components and Features

The KAPLAN HYBRID vehicle boasts a modern hybrid powerpack, enhancing its speed, maneuverability, and operational range. This setup allows for silent driving and extended silent tracking, making it suitable for stealth missions [1][2].

The ALKA DEWS system is equipped with electromagnetic jamming capabilities and a high-energy laser, enabling it to neutralize a wide variety of aerial threats, such as fixed-wing and rotary-wing mini/micro UAVs and loitering munitions [4].

To increase efficiency, the system utilizes AI-assisted algorithms for rapid detection, prioritization, and neutralization of threats. These algorithms work in conjunction with the vehicle's radar and electro-optical sensors to identify and target drones [1][4].

Operational Capabilities

The ALKA-KAPLAN offers both "soft" and "hard" kill options to provide a comprehensive defense against drone threats:

  • Electromagnetic Jamming: This method disrupts drones' communication systems, effectively neutralizing them without physical destruction, known as "soft kill."
  • Laser Engagement: The high-energy laser can destroy drones completely, providing a "hard kill" capability against fixed-wing and rotary-wing targets from a distance [4].

Strategic Significance

The ALKA-KAPLAN signifies a significant shift in modern military strategy, focusing on advanced technologies like electromagnetic jamming and directed energy weapons to counter the evolving drone threat. It underscores Turkey's dedication to integrating cutting-edge technologies into its defense systems, making it a valuable asset for ground units facing drone threats [4].

Notably, FNSS developed the generator and the locally produced cross-drive gearbox for the ALKA-KAPLAN's powerpack, while the KAPLAN HYBRID Powerpack was first showcased as a concept in 2023 [3]. The generator provides extended silent operation, crucial for stealth and reconnaissance missions.

The ALKA-KAPLAN will be officially unveiled at IDEF 2025, showcasing Turkey's focus on modernizing its armored vehicles and countering unmanned aerial systems [5]. The ALKA DEWS can neutralize a wide range of asymmetric aerial threats, including fixed-wing and rotary-wing mini/micro UAVs and loitering munitions, before they can damage frontline assets [6].

The ALKA-KAPLAN is designed for up to 20 tons of platforms [7]. With its advanced features and capabilities, the ALKA-KAPLAN is poised to play a significant role in the future of military technology.
