Trump Unveils 20-Point Gaza Plan, Faces Mixed Reactions
US President Donald Trump has unveiled a 20-point plan for Gaza, aiming to end the long-standing conflict. The proposal, which includes a ceasefire, hostage release, and Israeli withdrawal, has sparked varied reactions from key players. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister, has expressed support, while Hamas is currently reviewing the plan. Several Arab nations have welcomed the proposals, but Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has criticized it.
Trump's plan, described by him as a 'beautiful day' for peace, demands significant concessions from Hamas. It calls for the militant group to disarm completely and be excluded from future governance, but offers amnesty for those willing to embrace 'peaceful coexistence'. The plan also includes a post-war transitional authority, with Trump himself at its head.
Netanyahu has cast doubt on the Palestinian Authority's role in Gaza's governance post-ceasefire. He expects the Israeli military to maintain a presence in most of the territory. Meanwhile, several Arab countries, including Qatar, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, have swiftly expressed support for Trump's plan, welcoming its proposals to rebuild Gaza and end fighting.
A senior Hamas official confirmed receiving the plan via Qatari and Egyptian mediators. However, the group has yet to formally respond to Trump's proposals. During a meeting with Netanyahu, Trump noted that the Israeli Prime Minister had previously opposed Palestinian statehood.
Trump's plan for Gaza, while welcomed by several Arab nations and Israel, faces uncertainty from Hamas and criticism from within Israel's own government. As the plan calls for significant changes from Hamas and the Israeli military, its implementation remains to be seen. The international community awaits Hamas' response and further developments in the region.
