Turkey and UAE finalize 7 significant agreements to fortify their relations
Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have taken a significant step forward in their strategic partnership, as seven bilateral agreements were signed during a high-level visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Ankara. The agreements aim to deepen strategic cooperation across various sectors, including trade, defense, energy, technology, transportation, tourism and hospitality, pharmaceuticals, industry and manufacturing, food and agriculture, and even polar research.
The rapid expansion of bilateral trade between Turkey and the UAE is evident, with a goal to exceed $20 billion this year and a medium-term target of $40 billion. The strengthening economic ties between the two nations are reflected in this ambitious growth.
In the defense sector, the countries have agreed on mutual protection of classified information, which will facilitate cooperation in defense projects, including potential co-development, technical assistance, and technology transfer programs. This agreement is particularly important for sensitive defense partnerships involving unmanned systems and other dual-use technologies.
The energy sector is another area of focus, with cooperation expected to include various projects building on past interactions. Turkish companies have attracted interest from the UAE for their technological capabilities in this sector.
The agreements also aim to enhance cooperation in technology, which is crucial for advancing defense, aviation, and other high-tech industries. Additionally, there are plans to invest in the pharmaceutical industry, reflecting a diversification of economic cooperation between the two countries.
In the transportation sector, while specific agreements were not detailed, the overall strategic partnership includes cooperation in this sector, aligning with broader economic and infrastructure development goals. The leaders have also agreed to collaborate in the food and agriculture sectors.
A memorandum of understanding on investment cooperation in tourism and hospitality was signed, indicating a focus on expanding joint investments in these sectors. However, no new agreements were announced regarding the deepening of strategic cooperation across key sectors, although the leaders have been seeking to expand their partnerships.
The leaders had a productive discussion on regional issues, particularly the situation in Gaza, during the one-on-one meeting between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Sheikh Mohammed. This meeting marked the inaugural session of the Turkey-UAE High-Level Strategic Council.
Another memorandum on cooperation in polar research was signed by Turkey's Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır and the UAE's Industry and Advanced Technology Minister Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber. The agreements also cover the formation of a joint consular committee.
These agreements signify a significant step forward in the strategic partnership between Turkey and the UAE, encompassing a wide range of sectors and laying the groundwork for future collaborative endeavors. This development comes after the two countries repaired their ties over the last three years, which also saw Ankara mending relations with Saudi Arabia. The leaders have recently been in close contact, especially over the Iran-Israel tensions and the ongoing Israeli attacks on Palestinians in Gaza.
