In a recent turn of events, several popular streaming platforms have been fined and faced sanctions in Turkey due to the content of certain productions being deemed as a violation of national and moral values.
The Turkish media authority, RTÜK, has taken action against Disney Plus, Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, and MUBI. The fines were imposed following the portrayal of queer content that allegedly disregarded family values.
Disney Plus's "All of Us Strangers," Netflix's "Cobalt Blue" and HBO Max's "Looking: The Movie," as well as MUBI's "Benedetta," were penalized for promoting homosexuality and containing explicit scenes. As a result, "Cobalt Blue," "Looking: The Movie," and "Benedetta" have been ordered to be removed from their Turkish catalogues.
Prime Video's series "Those About To Die" was also fined for depicting bloody executions, violence, and homosexual relations with explicit scenes.
