U.S. Army Awards Piersica Over $1.9 Million for Progress in Developing Powerful Battery Technology
Piersica Inc. Advances Ultra-High Energy Density Battery Technology with $1.9 Million Army SBIR Grant
Piersica Inc., a leading innovator in battery technology, has been awarded a $1.9 million U.S. Army SBIR Phase II contract to further develop its ultra-high energy density battery technology. This grant will propel Piersica's groundbreaking innovations in the realm of energy storage, with the potential to revolutionize various industries.
The technology at the heart of Piersica's advancements includes several proprietary innovations designed to significantly improve battery capacity, cycle life, safety, and weight. Key among these are:
- A unique lithium-conductive fiber anode mat, which is flexible and overcomes the manufacturing challenges of rigid materials in large-format cells.
- A proprietary solid-state polymer separator that is highly conductive, stable at high voltage, and compatible with advanced cathode materials. This separator enhances energy density, charging rate, and safety beyond commercial lithium-ion batteries.
- The incorporation of a manganese-based lithium-rich, high-voltage cathode, boosting overall energy output.
- The polymer separator's stability in open atmosphere and its ability to be produced cheaply at scale.
The goal is to produce the highest energy density battery cell on the market, with exceptional safety and extended cycle life.
This technology targets a broad range of applications, including consumer electronics, electric vehicles, drones, autonomous and wearable military systems, robotics, and electric flight. The funding will enable Piersica to demonstrate the technical feasibility of their prototype cell through validation of energy density, capacity, and cycle life over the next 15 months. The collaboration also provides access to U.S. Army technical experts to guide the technology maturation for Army acquisition programs.
The grant, titled "Energy Demand Reduction and Clean Energy Tech," will be instrumental in further developing, demonstrating, and delivering Piersica's innovative ultra-high energy density battery technology. The next-generation battery technology developed by Piersica is expected to be used in various military applications such as portable electronics, long-range drones, autonomous systems, electric ground vehicles, and portable energy weapon platforms.
Piersica, Inc. has secured a total of seven SBIR grants over the last three years, including this second SBIR Phase II grant. The company has earned a total of $3.8 million in SBIR grants from the U.S. Army, the National Science Foundation, and the US Air Force/AFWERX. Claudiu Bucur, CEO of Piersica, Inc., expressed excitement about earning the third Army SBIR Program contract in the last three years, stating that the additional funding will aid in the maturation of Piersica's technology, crucial for the commercialization of future defense applications.
