Ukraine to receive tens of thousands of drone construction systems, impervious to anti-drone systems (REB systems)
The American-German software development company, Auterion, has secured a significant contract worth $50 million from the Pentagon. This deal will see Auterion deliver 33,000 AI-powered drone "strike kits" (Skynode modules) to Ukraine by the end of 2025.
These strike kits will transform manually controlled drones into semi-autonomous AI weapons systems, resistant to electronic jamming, and capable of tracking moving targets up to 1 kilometer away using onboard cameras and radios. The kits operate on Auterion’s hardened AuterionOS software, which enhances drone autonomy and GPS resilience.
The initiative forms part of the US Department of Defense’s ongoing security assistance to Ukraine, aimed at bolstering its defense against intensifying Russian swarm drone attacks. Russia has escalated their aerial campaign by modernizing drones like the Shahed models and increasing their deployment, pushing Ukraine to develop countermeasures. Auterion’s technology provides Ukraine with precise targeting in complex combat scenarios while mitigating vulnerability to electronic warfare, a significant tactical advantage.
The scale of this support represents a major step-up in AI drone warfare for Ukraine, described by Auterion CEO Lorenz Meier as "unprecedented" and markedly larger than previous shipments. It also signifies recognition of Ukraine’s battlefield experience, incorporating "battle-hardened" drone products into NATO-aligned technologies.
Strategic importance for NATO is also evident, as these autonomous drone capabilities are of interest to US, German, and other NATO defense forces for interoperability in future unmanned systems arsenals.
In summary, this deal substantially enhances Ukraine’s autonomous drone warfare capacity as Russia escalates drone swarm tactics, while simultaneously advancing US-led efforts in AI-enabled military technology and coalition defense collaboration. The increased supplies to Kyiv will help Ukraine combat the rising number of Russian drone attacks.
The new deliveries will be "ten times larger" than previous orders, marking a significant expansion of prior support. The Skynode system will enable swarms of autonomous drones to communicate with each other during attacks, providing a formidable response to the Russian threat. The systems can independently attack targets using their "computer vision," bypassing radio electronic warfare (REW) systems and various physical obstacles. They are already being used in Ukrainian drones performing combat tasks against Russia.
This news comes at a time when the world watches the ongoing conflict in Ukraine closely. The new contract is not related to the "mega-drone deal" discussed between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former American President Donald Trump. Auterion’s headquarters are located in Virginia, USA, underscoring the company’s commitment to supporting its allies in times of need.
The AI-powered drone kits, equipped with technology from Auterion, will enhance Ukraine's defense against escalating drone attacks from Russia, providing a formidable response to the threat by enabling swarms of autonomous drones to communicate and independently attack targets using computer vision. This technology, operating on AuterionOS software, offers precision in complex combat scenarios, mitigating vulnerability to electronic warfare, thereby offering a significant tactical advantage.
