UK's Global Talent Visa to Become More Appealing as US H-1B Policy Drives Tech Giants
The UK's Global Talent visa, designed to attract highly skilled professionals, is set to become even more appealing. The UK Government is considering reducing or removing application fees, while tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are increasingly turning to this route due to changes in the US H-1B visa policy.
The Trump administration's new H-1B visa policy, announced on 19 September, has created uncertainty for global companies. The policy, effective from 21 September, includes a significant fee increase, driving tech firms to explore alternatives for hiring international talent. Irwin Mitchell, a leading immigration firm, has witnessed a noticeable spike in calls within the first seven days since the announcement.
Mandeep Khroud, Head of Immigration at Irwin Mitchell, commented on the potential impact of the US policy change on UK business immigration. He noted a clear rise in enquiries about the Global Talent visa, indicating a potential link between immigration policy and foreign investment. Tech companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta have indeed increased their applications for the UK Global Talent visa and expect the number of applications to continue rising in the coming months.
The UK Government's consideration to reduce or remove Global Talent visa application fees, coupled with the uncertainty surrounding the US H-1B visa policy, is expected to boost the UK's appeal for highly skilled professionals and the companies that employ them. Tech giants' increased interest in the Global Talent visa suggests a potential shift in hiring strategies for international talent.
