Embark on a dream emboldened by Jacques Cousteau, a man whose spirit stirred the hearts of would-be ocean explorers. In the late '90s, Dutch business magnate Bert Houtman encountered a roadblock in his pursuit of a submarine for his yacht. Unyielding, he established U-Boat Worx, a company that revolutionized submarine production.
The Nemo series, U-Boat Worx's jewel in the crown, boasts an impressive array of features. Originally designed for the cruise industry and mega-yachts, the Nemo was crafted as a more compact vessel for smaller yachts (over 30 meters) capable of plunging to 100 meters—a seemingly impossible undertaking at the time. The Nemo 2 sets itself apart in two significant ways: it's the world's only mass-produced submersible and the lightest two-seater manned submersible for this depth (a mere 2,500 kg).

Being headquartered in the Netherlands presents unique challenges: shallow seas, poor visibility, and turbulent currents. To circumvent these obstacles, U-Boat Worx opened its Sub Center in Curacao, not only to get its craft certified but also to offer training for new owners.
"The Nemo 2 is super user-friendly," explains Roy Heijdra, U-Boat Worx's resident expert. "We’ve made it as effortless as possible to operate. After about 20 dives, you’re ready to conquer the deep blue. Safety is our top priority."
Although I’ve yet to dive the Curaçaoan reefs aboard the Nemo 2, footage from its cockpit shows an underwater experience on the cusp of being ethereal. Heijdra shared his insight, "Our mission has always been to bring the underwater world within reach, and mass production has made subs much more affordable. Still, the cost remains far from the typical car, but we’re making progress!"
