Undercover Recruitment Platform: MI6, the British intelligence agency, sets up an encryption-secured website on the dark web to attract potential foreign operatives for employment.
In a significant move, Britain's foreign intelligence service, MI6, has announced the launch of a new online portal called Silent Courier. The service, designed for anonymous access to a secure MI6 messaging platform, is aimed at recruiting new spies, particularly targeting Russia.
The new portal will rely on the Tor internet browser for anonymous access and encourages potential informants to use a trustworthy VPN to contact MI6. The MI6 website, sis.gov.uk, provides an online form to fill in for this purpose.
Sir Richard Moore, the outgoing chief of MI6, made an appeal in a public speech in Prague in July 2023 for Russian citizens to spy for the UK. His valedictory speech, which will be delivered this Friday in Istanbul, will launch the new service, Silent Courier.
Users are advised to take significant precautions to safely use the service. This includes using devices not linked to themselves and creating a new email address they can reply to, without using a name, phone number, or other data linked to their real identity when creating this account.
The new "C" of MI6, Blaise Metriwelli, will succeed Sir Richard Moore next month. Metriwelli, who was formerly "Q," the director in MI6 responsible for innovation and technology, is the first woman to hold the role of "C".
The launch of Silent Courier is being handled by the UK Foreign Office, which handles MI6's communications. The video accompanying the launch of Silent Courier references the image of MI6's espionage associated with the fictional spy James Bond.
In the same year, the CIA launched a similar online mechanism to Silent Courier on the Tor network, also appealing for potential spies to pass secret information. The UK Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, stated that the UK is bolstering their efforts with cutting-edge tech so MI6 can recruit new spies for the UK, in Russia and around the world.
Instructions for using Silent Courier will be given on MI6's new YouTube channel at 2am Eastern Time on Friday. The service requires users to use trustworthy VPNs and the Tor internet browser for anonymous access. The UK is taking bold steps to strengthen its intelligence capabilities and recruit new spies in the digital age.
